Mark your calendars because FANDOMiCON is HERE (soon)

By Jessica
Teen Advisory Group member

Hiya peeps! It seems like I’m the Hermes of TAG, relaying messages from the group to the outside world, just minus the awesome flying shoes and the lovely mentalities of Greek gods… and the fact that I’m neither a male nor a someone kind of deity.

Regardless, I’m here to tell you that we have another convention coming up very soon! Friday, February 16th, soon, in fact!

As always….

General Overview:

Who: you and your buddies
What: FANDOMiCON
When: Friday, February 16th, 2018 (4:30-9:00)
Where: Flower Mound Public Library
3030 Broadmoor Ln.
Flower Mound, TX 75022

If you didn’t notice, this convention is held partly after the library closes, which means the library needs a permission form from your parent or guardian signing that they are okay with you being in the public building after hours. The library is accepting forms up to the day of the convention, meaning that you can bring your paper as you walk into the convention the day of, and you’ll totally be okay. Of course, you can also turn in your form early if you want to. If you do not have a permission form, then you can ask for one at the youth desk at the library.

Now that the technical stuff is out of the way, on to the activities! Continue reading

Probably the Weirdest Fandom I’ve Encountered (which is saying a lot) | Night Vale Random Fandom

By Jessica
Teen Advisory Group member

Hi howdy hello everyone! Long time no see. February is right around the corner (I can’t believe we’re already a month into 2018) which means another Random Fandom!

All you Night Vale fans rejoice! We are finally doing a Welcome to Night Vale Random Fandom!

Image result for excited gif

Now, like a lot of the fandoms we cover, I don’t know too much about it. I read a couple chapters of the book that the creators wrote, but that’s about all I know, so forgive me if I make any mistakes.

You know the drill!

Overview

Who: you and all your friends
What: Night Vale Random Fandom
When: Thursday, February 8 (4:00 – 5:30 pm)
Where: Flower Mound Public Library in the Program Room (near the restrooms)
3030 Broadmoor Ln.
Flower Mound, TX 75022

Just remember: You don’t have to be in the fandom to come to the Random Fandom events. We try and plan out activities that both people in and out of the fandom will enjoy and understand.

Speaking of activities, we planned a jam-packed hour and a half for those of you who decide to attend!

A couple ground rules before you enter:

1. Just know that pretend mountains don’t exist.
2. You must hail the Glow Cloud when its (?) name is mentioned

Not too hard, now is it?

(Author’s note: I don’t know what the Glow Cloud is and I’m not about to assume its gender so it will remain an “it” to me until someone explains to me what it is.)

Now on to the activities!

There is going to be a game online where you can try and survive being an intern. There will also be a round of Round Robin and Pin the Three Tails on the Cat. You can also expect to make your own Glow Cloud if you decide to attend. You will also have the opportunity to play a game called Shoot the Librarian.

(Author’s note: We will not be shooting the actual librarians who are running this program. It is a Mafia-type game.)

And what’s a Night Vale Random Fandom without having a couple episodes of the Night Vale podcast? A fellow TAG member is curating a playlist of his favorite episodes to play in the background.

There will also be a game called “Is this quote from Night Vale or social media?” where there will be a quote on the screen and you have to guess whether it’s from Night Vale or someone posted it on social media. Going on the theme of guessing, there will be a game of guess the NV character with vague clues where the person giving the description must give a generalized description of a character and the people on their team will try and guess who the character is. It’s almost like a combination of Taboo and Charades.

If guessing games are not your thing, then maybe a game of telephone and paranoia will be! We are also going to chant school fight songs in a circle because why the heck not? It doesn’t matter if you don’t know your school fight song (I don’t either) because there will be lyrics provided. There is going to be a scavenger hunt where you have to spot the angel hidden somewhere in the children/teen section of the library.

Are you interested in any of these activities? Then make sure to mark your calendars for the Night Vale Random Fandom and come visit us!

See you there!

Here comes your friendly neighborhood superhero! | Spider-Man Random Fandom

By Jessica
Teen Advisory Group member

Spider-Man: Homecoming was released earlier this year and nerds and geek alike fell in love with all the characters.

I, personally, don’t have an opinion about the movie yet because I haven’t watched it (I know. Shame on me.). However, I have a major celebrity crush on Tom Holland. I mean, who doesn’t?

In celebration of the movie (yes, we know it’s a little late), December’s Random Fandom will be Spider-Man themed! Because we know there are a lot of fans of the older Spider-Man movies, this RF is not limited to the recent movie.

As always…

A Quick Overview of the Program:

Who: you and your buddies
What: Spider-Man Random Fandom
When: Thursday, December 14 (4:00-5:30)
Where: Flower Mound Public Library in the Program Room (near the restrooms)
3030 Broadmoor Ln.
Flower Mound, TX 75022

Activities:

To start off, there will be a trivia in related to Spider-Man. From what I heard, it might be a Kahoot, so be prepared to jam out to the bomb Kahoot soundtrack!

There will also be a silly string target practice outside where players have cans of silly string to spray at villains. The silly string will act like Spider-Man’s webs that shoot out of his wrists. Whoever successfully defeats all the villains in the shortest amount of time wins. Just remember, do not spray your fellow players with the silly string!

In honor of the viral .gif of Spider-Man dancing (pictured above) that supposedly can go with any music, there will be a dance. It might be a dance battle. It might be just a dancing fest. Who knows? You’ll have to attend to find out!

Just like in the beginning of the movie, there will be a task to steal Captain America’s shield! On top of that, there will be a mini scavenger hunt in search for Stan Lee, who made a cameo in the recent movie.

And because we’re a bunch of nerds, we are also going to play Superfight. I’m going to try and TL;DR the rules of the game:

Basically, there are a stack of white cards and a stack of black cards. The white cards have characters on them (ex. ninja) while the black cards have powers on them (ex. ability to freeze things). When it’s their turn, the player picks up three white and three black cards. They have to choose one white and one black one, set them face down, and return the remaining unused cards into the deck. The next player does the same. Then both players turns over the chosen white card (to reveal their character) and then have to choose a black card from the deck at random to add to their skill. Then they reveal everything to the table (the rest of the players waiting their turn) and have to plead their case as to who would win in an one-on-one battle. Whoever the table chooses wins the round. If you want to official rules of the game (because I know I’m terrible at explaining things), click here to go to the official rules page. All you need to know is that the game is tons of fun.

In addition to all the fun games, there will be web serum punch served (don’t worry, you don’t have to be bitten by a radioactive spider to enjoy it) and maybe get to watch the Honest Trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

It doesn’t matter than you’ve never watched a Spider-Man movie in your whole entire life (like myself). You can still attend Random Fandom! It’s just a program to spend time with like-minded people and have fun. Don’t forget to mark December 14th on your calendar and hope to see you there!

Calling All Superheroes! | Justice League Random Fandom

By Jessica
Teen Advisory Group member

DC is releasing another superhero movie soon! It’s called Justice League, and it’s coming out on Friday, November 17. According to a fellow nerd, although almost all of the DC Comics superheroes have been part of the Justice League at one point or another, this movie focuses on five of them: Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg.

Insert the Theme Music from Law & Order Here

rffingerprintIn case you don’t know, Law & Order is a show that’s been on for a billion years, it’s almost always playing on USA at any time of day, and your favorite actor has probably made an appearance on it at some point.

L&O aside, we love crime shows. There are so many of them, and they’re all the same but different. Whether the dead body is in LA, New York, Miami, Vegas, or Hawaii, we love the mystery and we love the characters. That’s why September’s Random Fandom celebrates the upcoming seasons of all crime shows.

BTW, Random Fandom is THURSDAY at 4 p.m. One of you will play the dead body, one of you will be the killer, and the rest of you will have to figure it out before you run out of time in this special murder mystery based on our favorite crime show characters.

If you need to get into the mood, go to your Netflix queue and watch a few episodes of CSI or NCIS, listen to the mystery of an actual crime on Serial, or check out one of these books: Continue reading

Happy Back to School Day!

Or Not-So-Happy Back to School Day, depending on your POV. The blog is back from its summer hiatus, so we’re starting off with an update of ALL THE THINGS.

taglogoThis Wednesday (8/24), 4:30-5:30

TAG, a.k.a. the Teen Advisory Group. If you’re not already in TAG, you can join at any time, but this Wednesday is the first meeting of the school year, and we’re talking about a lot, so it’s an important one to come to if you’re new. TAG plans Random Fandom every month, and you get volunteer hours if you need them, and all the cool kids will be there, and if you’re reading this, you’re cool and you should be there too. (Did the peer pressure work? Just checking.)

HS anime logoSaturday, September 3, 1-4:30

High School Anime (formerly known as Otaku Kyokai No Flower Mound) is open to freshmen and up. Watch movies, eat snacks, talk about cosplay and cons, geek out… you know, a normal Saturday 🙂 Screenings shown are for older audiences, so sorry, middle schoolers! Check out the next program below:

animedaze logoWednesday, September 7, 4:30-5:30

Watch short episodes of your favorite new and old shows, eat snacks, talk about cosplay and cons, and have fun! New this year, Anime Daze is open to everyone in grades 6-12, so if you feel like hanging out after school and watching anime, come join us!

Random Fandom logoThursday, September 8, 4-5:30

It’s all about the crime shows for September’s RANDOM FANDOM. CSI (and all its spin-offs), NCIS (and all its spin-offs), etc. We don’t know exactly what we’re doing yet, but that’s why you should come to TAG on Wednesday.

gaming unplugged logoSunday, September 11, 2-4

Come play games with us! We’ll have board and card games to choose from, or you can bring one from home with all of your closest friends/enemies to defeat them all in the game of your choice.

TWG logoWednesday, September 14, 4:30-5:30

If you’re an aspiring author, a Wrimo, write fanfic, have a Wattpad, or just post drabbles to your Tumblr, join the Teen Writing Group! We do writing exercises that might make you a better writer, you can get feedback from your fellow writers, and we play storytelling games to squash our inner editors (and it’s possible we may be nerds.) Every meeting, you can enter the door prize to win a free book! (All of the books at the library are free, right, but this one you don’t have to bring back.)

MS Book Club logoMonday, September 19, 4:30-5:30

The book of the month is Holes by Louis Sachar. Pick up your copy from the Youth Services Desk to read before the meeting, and bring it with you to discuss. This book club is only for grades 6-8!

bibliomaniacs logoWednesday, September 21, 4:30-5:30

Bring your favorite book, the book you hate, the book you’re currently reading, or anything you want to talk/rant about! This book club has NO ASSIGNED READING! We’ll fancast our favorite characters and hang out. This book club is only for grades 9-12!

taglogoWednesday, September 28, 4:30-5:30

And then we’re back to TAG to plan the October Random Fandom and talk about the upcoming volunteer opportunities for Haunted Library!

Bollywood Random Fandom

Hey guys! It’s Mayher! Sorry I haven’t been posting lately but I’m working on contributing to this blog a lot more.

Some pretty big news that you guys probably heard about is that WE ARE HAVING A BOLLYWOOD RANDOM FANDOM! This is the best news any Indian can hear.

yaas

This RF will occur on March 10th from 4-5:30 in the program room. Please wear white or bring a change of white clothes for the Holi event (last part of the RF).

Here’s a little bit of background about Bollywood:

Bollywood is one of the biggest film industries in the WORLD and it made 204 movies in 2015 alone. The highest grossing movie of 2015 was Bajrangi Bhaijaan(according to Wikipedia, the most reliable source 😉 making over 626 crore rupees or 92 million US dollars.

waah

Translation: wow, very good XD

Not to mention, the amount of fangirls and fanboys is literally the entire population of India plus more. That’s a lot of moms.

sk

This is Salman Khan. My favorite actor as well as my mom’s. Don’t Judge.

SRK

This is Shahrukh Khan. Another well loved actor.

My favorite part about Bollywood is the singing and the dancing in every single movie. Everyone wants to know the latest song or learn the latest dance move. They express sheer joy and happiness throughout the world. (And I get ALL the songs stuck in my head; it’s hard to not love them.)

madhuri

Madhuri Dixit aka Dancing Queen of Bollywood

We decided it would be appropriate to host this RF during the spring time because of the ever so popular holiday: Holi.

Holi is about the celebration of colors in the Hindu religion (but many people outside of the religion like myself can still celebrate it). It is similar to Diwali in that it represents the good overcoming the evil, but Holi is celebrated to mark the beginning of Spring. People throughout India flood the streets wearing white and throw colored powder at each other, and it is a very fun event.

holi.jpg

And look how pretty Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor look in Yeh Jiwani Hai Diwani.(I ship them so hard.)

balam pichkari.gif

Even in this Gif she’s saying she’s having fun. (Itna maza)

Well, I hope you guys can make it and celebrate the glories that Bollywood has to offer!
